Unit 25, Cristo La Única Esperanza was inaugurated in 2002 to house inmates who professed the evangelical faith and who were willing to accept that the main rules of the prison were directed and implemented by intramural religious authorities, who administered the institution with the full and explicit support of the guards and the hierarchies of the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service (SPB). During its beginnings and for a few more years, both the directors and the majority of its guards and professionals also confessed the evangelical faith and adhered to its particular intramural administration. Most of the inmates of U25 had requested this destination and all those who remained there did so by personal decision and undertook to submit to an extremely strict regime that, among other things, prohibited the use of tobacco, drugs and alcohol, while requiring active participation in the - for many - exhausting religious, work and study activities. In exchange, they were offered a detention without risk to their physical integrity and far from the extreme deprivation and overcrowding that distinguish the rest of the SPB prisons.
